Description
Managed since 1985 by Hubert de Boüard de Laforest, Angélus has belonged to his family since 1782 when Jean de Boüard de Laforest, King's bodyguard, moved to Saint-Emilion. The Castle takes its name from the fact that in the past you could hear the Angelus ringing both by the bells of the chapel of Mazerat and those of the churches of Saint-Martin and Saint-Emilion at this precise place.
In 1954, during the first classification of Saint-Emilion, Château Angélus was classified Grand Cru. The estate certainly enjoys an exceptional terroir but also shows the importance of man's imprint on the terroir: before 1980, the wines, rich and fruity, lacked elegance; Subsequently, the viticulture and winemaking methods were considerably improved under the leadership of Hubert de Boüard, allowing a good number of his peers in Saint-Emilion to be qualitatively behind. In fact, during the last classification revision of the appellation, which took place in 2012, Angélus reached the top step of the podium, becoming Premier Cru Classé “A” alongside châteaux Cheval Blanc, Ausone and Pavie. Green harvest in July, aging in new oak barrels, fermentation in stainless steel vats with temperature control system, no filtration at bottling. Today the new generation (the 8th) has joined the management of the estate with Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal, daughter of Hubert de Boüard (since 2012) and her cousin Thierry Grenié-de Boüard, son of Jean- Bernard Grenié (since 2016). The recent vintages of Angélus (named Grand Cru Classé A since 2012), more colorful and concentrated than in the past, offer gourmet aromas of black fruits, mocha coffee and toasted oak, without forgetting an impressive aging potential.
