2023 at the Domain Simon Colin
Domaine Simon Colin's vision for the 2023 vintage
Vintage 2023 at Domaine Simon Colin: a remarkable balance between generosity and freshness
The 2023 vintage was a year of contrasts for Domaine Simon Colin. Between capricious weather and generally favourable climatic conditions, the wines produced from this harvest are of exceptional quality, especially the whites, which are particularly well suited to ageing.
A climate punctuated by extremes
After an average dry winter, the spring of 2023 was remarkably early, with buds coming out early. An episode of frost on 15 April almost compromised the harvest, but fortunately temperatures did not exceed the critical threshold.
The vines grew in generous sunshine, punctuated by regular rainfall, providing ideal conditions despite heavy pressure from powdery mildew. The summer was marked by two weeks of heatwave, fortunately offset by rainfall in August, avoiding any excessive water stress. A slight hail storm affected some of the lower parts of Chassagne-Montrachet, causing minor damage.

Harvesting in intense heat
The harvest began on 2 September under unusual conditions, with a persistent heatwave. To preserve the freshness of the grapes, the harvest was carried out early in the morning, avoiding the high temperatures of the afternoon. The aim was to avoid any deterioration caused by prolonged exposure to the sun.
The white wines are remarkably generous, with satisfactory yields and almost perfect acid balance. Their lively, sharp profile, with a more pronounced body than the 2022s, brings them closer to Simon's 2014 vintage, offering promising ageing potential.
For the red wines, the challenge was more complex. Variations in ripeness within the plots made the choice of harvest time tricky. Simon Colin's aim is to obtain fine, silky tannins, which has required extra vigilance. The 2023 vintage is closer to 2018, with richer tannins than 2022, although its ageing potential remains uncertain.
A promising vintage to watch closely
While the whites promise to be dazzling and ideal for laying down, the reds need to be watched closely to see how they develop. Simon Colin has produced an exceptional harvest, proving once again his expertise and ability to get the best out of each vintage. A year to watch for lovers of Burgundy wines in search of elegance and balance.
