  • The history of the family estate

The Boigey Frères estate was founded in late 2017 as the result of a human and family adventure deeply rooted in Burgundy. Behind the name are two brothers, Olivier and Guillaume Boigey, representatives of the fourth generation of winemakers in the family. The history of the vineyard began in 1900 with the creation of the family estate under the name Albert Noirot, whose vines still form the foundation of the Boigey estate today.

Although their respective professional careers temporarily took them away from the vineyards, Olivier and Guillaume always maintained a strong connection to their native terroir. In 2014, driven by a shared passion for viticulture and Burgundy, the two brothers began to seriously consider taking over the family business, with the desire to perpetuate a century of expertise.

The project came to fruition at the end of 2017, when Olivier Boigey decided to embark fully on the adventure and officially found the Boigey Frères estate. Guillaume quickly joined him, notably for the 2019 harvest, a landmark year that also saw the estate's first bottling. Keen not to rush things, the Boigey brothers opted for a gradual ramp-up, initially focusing on just three appellations for the 2019 and 2020 vintages.

This thoughtful approach allows them to refine their style and vision. In 2021, the estate reached a new milestone with the addition of prestigious Burgundy appellations such as Vosne-Romanée Les Suchots and Nuits-Saint-Georges Les Boudots. The 2023 vintage marks a major turning point with the reintegration of one of the family's most beautiful historic plots: Les Échezeaux, a symbol of renewal and ambition for the Boigey Frères estate.

Today, the Boigey estate has established itself as a hidden gem in the Côte de Nuits, combining respect for family traditions, high quality standards, and the sincere expression of Burgundy's great terroirs.

  • The Philosophy of the Boigey Frères Estate

The philosophy of Domaine Boigey is based on an approach that respects living organisms, the terroir, and time. Heirs to a long family tradition in Burgundy, Olivier and Guillaume Boigey apply common sense to their work, where every decision is guided by observation of the vines and the most accurate expression of the climates.

In the vineyard, the estate favors minimal intervention, without chemicals, in order to preserve the natural balance of the soil and biodiversity. This requirement is reflected in every stage of the work, from soil management to pruning the vines, with a constant desire to limit inputs and respect natural cycles. For Domaine Boigey, a great wine is born above all from healthy, living vines.

The same philosophy prevails in the cellar. Vinification is minimally interventionist, carried out with precision and humility, allowing the grapes and the vintage to express themselves freely. Aging is designed to complement the wine without overpowering it, with the aim of preserving the purity of the fruit, the finesse of the textures, and the identity of each appellation.

The Boigey estate thus produces sincere and elegant terroir wines that faithfully reflect Burgundy and its climates. This quest for authenticity, combined with great technical rigor, makes the estate a sought-after destination for lovers of precise, balanced wines that are deeply rooted in their origins.

  • The management of the Boigey Frères vineyards

Soil management

At Domaine Boigey, soil management plays a central role in the running of the vineyard. Olivier and Guillaume Boigey have chosen to practice environmentally friendly viticulture, guided by a desire to allow the terroir to express itself as accurately as possible. No synthetic chemicals are used in the vineyards in order to preserve biodiversity, microbial life in the soil, and the natural balance of the vineyard.

Soil cultivation is preferred to chemical weed control. This is done mechanically and manually, using a small crawler tractor, specially chosen to limit soil compaction and respect the natural structure of the earth. Plowing is deliberately light and shallow, to a depth of around ten centimeters, so as not to disturb the soil horizons while promoting aeration and deep rooting of the vines.

This gentle approach allows the roots to penetrate deeper into the subsoil, thereby strengthening the vines' natural resistance to climatic hazards and contributing to a better expression of the terroirs. Each intervention is carefully considered and adapted to the plot, the vintage, and the climatic conditions, based on constant observation rather than a systematic approach.

Thanks to this sustainable soil management, the Boigey estate produces healthy, balanced grapes, resulting in wines that are precise, lively, and true to their origins. A working philosophy that is in line with

Pruning vines

At Domaine Boigey, pruning the vines is considered a fundamental task, central to the balance of the plant and the quality of the grapes. True to its commitment to sustainable viticulture, the estate favors a gentle and thoughtful approach, adapted to the current climatic constraints in Burgundy.

The vines are trained using the cordon method and pruned in two stages. The first pruning is carried out during the winter to structure the vine and prepare it for future growth. A second pruning takes place later in the season, depending on climatic conditions and the vigor observed, allowing the load to be adjusted and the natural balance of each vine to be preserved.

The Boigey estate does not practice voluntary leaf removal. The vines are pruned relatively high, at around 1.40 meters, in order to preserve as much leaf surface area as possible. This choice promotes optimal photosynthesis while providing natural protection for the grapes against climatic hazards such as hail, sunburn, and increasingly frequent episodes of drought.

This careful pruning management preserves the longevity of the vines, respects their natural cycle, and produces ripe, balanced, and expressive grapes that are faithful to the identity of the Boigey estate's terroirs.

Treatments

At Domaine Boigey, vineyard management is based on a sustainable approach that respects the environment and living organisms. True to its philosophy, the estate deliberately limits its interventions to what is strictly necessary in order to preserve the natural balance of the soil, the vines, and the surrounding ecosystems.

Treatments are adapted each year according to climatic conditions and disease pressure. On average, between 6 and 8 passes are made annually in the vineyards, a deliberately low number for Burgundy. In certain favorable years, such as the 2021 vintage, the estate was able to limit itself to only 6 treatments, illustrating its ability to adapt finely to the conditions of the vintage.

All products used by the Boigey estate are certified organic. No herbicides, insecticides, or synthetic products are used. Treatments are based exclusively on solutions authorized in organic farming, aimed at protecting the vines while respecting the soil, beneficial wildlife, and the health of the teams.

This careful and measured approach to viticulture produces healthy, balanced and perfectly ripe grapes, while preserving the purest expression of the terroirs. The control of treatments is thus fully in line with the quest for authenticity and precision that characterizes the wines of Domaine Boigey, faithful reflections of their climates and vintages.

  • Winemaking method

At Domaine Boigey Frères, all grapes used for red wines are harvested by hand in large 60-liter crates. Each year, the team of harvesters, made up of family members and friends, ensures a meticulous harvest, allowing for an initial sorting on the vine to select only the finest bunches.

After harvesting, the grapes are transported in a refrigerated truck at between 40°F and 46°F overnight. The next day, they undergo a second sorting on a vibrating table to eliminate unwanted bunches. Only the finest bunches are kept and completely destemmed before vinification.

The grapes are then placed in stainless steel vats at 12°C for cold pre-fermentation maceration for 7 to 9 days. During this period, several pump-overs are carried out to extract the fruit's aromas and prepare the wine for fermentation. Pressing is carried out gently at 1.3 bar in a small press in order to extract the juice with precision, without extracting any bitterness from the seeds, thus preserving the freshness, tension, and salinity characteristic of the estate's wines.

Fermentation is 100% natural, with no added yeast or chemicals. It continues until approximately 1 g/l of residual sugar is reached. The wines are then aged in oak barrels for 10 to 18 months, depending on the plot. The estate carries out very little filtration and uses sulfur sparingly, only when necessary to ensure the stability of the wine.

Before bottling, nitrogen is injected to remove any residual oxygen, ensuring optimal preservation. Each bottle is then checked to verify the absence of oxygen, ensuring perfect aging and maximum quality for the Boigey estate's red wines.

  • A word about wine aging

The Boigey Frères estate, whose first vintage dates back to 2019, produces high-quality red wines from prestigious plots in Vosne-Romanée and Nuits-Saint-Georges. Although recent vintages offer only limited cellaring potential, the typical characteristics of the terroirs and the aromatic richness of the wines suggest excellent aging potential.

The estate's red Burgundy wines are distinguished by their freshness and lightness, making them accessible from their early years. On the other hand, wines from more prestigious appellations, such as Vosne-Romanée 1er cru “Les Suchots” or Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru “Les Damodes,” require a minimum of 3 to 4 years of aging for their aromas and structure to fully develop.

The grands crus and premiers crus have a particularly long aging potential. Under optimal storage conditions—a cellar with controlled temperature and humidity, bottles stored away from light and in a horizontal position—some wines can be kept and develop for more than ten years, revealing exceptional aromatic complexity and a harmonious texture.

The aging of Boigey wines also enhances the typical characteristics of the plots and terroir, offering Burgundy lovers unique sensory experiences over time. Olivier and Guillaume make it a point of honor to produce wines capable of evolving gracefully, offering immediate pleasure and aging potential for collectors and wine enthusiasts.

Thus, each bottle from the Boigey estate can be enjoyed at different stages of maturity, offering a richness and aromatic diversity that assert themselves over the years and highlight the excellence of the family's expertise, passed down through four generations.
