2021 at the Coffinet-Duvernay estate

Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay's vision for the 2021 vintage

The 2021 vintage was marked from the start of the year by a late frost which destroyed a large proportion of the vine buds, resulting in a very small harvest. At Domaine Coffinet-Duvernay, we estimate that 70% of the harvest was lost - a huge loss!

The harvest was later than in previous years and took place in the cool of late September, which was very good for the grapes. The grapes had time to ripen slowly thanks to the milder temperatures at the end of the summer, unlike in previous years when the sun and high temperatures accelerated the ripening process. A major sorting operation was carried out to ensure that only the finest, ripest grapes with low alcohol levels and good freshness and acidity were brought into the winery. Particular attention was paid to the must. On the vinification side, a fair amount of battonage was carried out to add richness, body and structure to the estate's wines.

All the work carried out by Bastien and his family in the vines and the winery is reflected in the bottle in an extremely successful 2021 vintage, which is very close to the style of wines produced in previous years. The wines are much less alcoholic and powerful than the 2019 and 2020 vintages, with more balance between freshness and acidity.

For the white wines, we're moving away from the exotic fruit aromas of recent years and returning to fresh white fruit, pear and floral aromas, more typical of the Côtes de Beaune terroir. The wines are delicious, with a fine balance between freshness and acidity. The wines have a fine structure and complex body, with magnificent, long, well-balanced acidity on the finish. The wines have a very slight reduction on opening, which will fade very quickly with age. That's why we recommend decanting your bottle of 2021 if you decide to drink it young.

As for the estate's red wines, they are closer to the 'old-style' Pinot Noirs of the Côte de Beaune, lighter than previous vintages, with good acidity and deep aromas of fresh red fruit. The wine is light, delicate and refined.
