Château Angélus

For several centuries, it is to the Boüard family that Château Angélus, an exceptional wine from Saint-Emilion, owes its growing reputation. However, its present configuration dates from the beginning of the 20th century when the Clos de l'Angélus was bought by Maurice de Boüard. This 3-hectare plot was named after the chimes of three places of worship: the chapel of Mazerat, the church of Saint-Martin de Mazerat and the church of Saint-Émilion. At that time, the bells which rang the Angelus several times a day gave rhythm to the days of the villagers. It was in 1955 that Maurice de Boüard's work was recognized. Indeed, that year, the estate was recognized as a Grand Cru Classé of Saint-Emilion red wines. Following the death of their father in 1959, Christian and Jacques took over the running of Château Angélus. At the end of the 1960s, they acquired an additional 3 hectares of land that belonged to Château Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse. Christian and Jacques handed over the reins in 1985, after 25 years at the head of Château Angélus. In 2012, like Château Cheval-Blanc, the wines of the estate were classified A among the first great growths of Saint-Emilion. They achieved this feat in about 20 years and thanks to the work of Hubert de Boüard, an important personality in the wine world of Bordeaux and France. Over the last ten years, the winery has undergone a complete renovation and now has a magnificent carillon. After several years of work dedicated to Château Angélus, Hubert de Boüard was replaced by Thierry Grenié-de Boüard in 2017 and by Stéphanie de Boüard-Rivoal in 2012. Today, President and CEO, she has a very modern and environmental vision of viticulture, especially through the use of technology, which is at the heart of the new winery.
