The great wine of Château Mouton-Rothschild comes from the best vines planted on the “Plateau de Mouton”, part of the 90ha of the property. Their root system has the possibility of anchoring itself in particularly deep gravelly soils. Pauillac obliges, Cabernet Sauvignon largely dominates the blend. We can find up to 80% depending on the vintage, complemented by Merlot and a touch of Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot. The harvest is obviously carried out manually. Each berry is combed through the vineyard and then into the cellar. The grapes, once destemmed, are put in vats without going through the press. Each vat has a different size corresponding to the various plots of the castle.

Description

Baron Nathaniel de Rothschild acquired the château in 1853, but the “Mouton” legend really began in 1922, with Baron Philippe de Rothschild. At 21 and driven by ambitions full of originality, he decided to devote his life to forging an identity and a worldwide reputation for the vineyard, which, from its earliest days, shone on the image of Bordeaux as a whole. In 1924, faced with the many deviations taking place among Bordeaux merchants, the owner inaugurated "full bottling at the château". In 1945, to celebrate the Liberation, the "V" for Victory crowned the vintage label, an initiative that marked the start of a series of original works created each year by famous painters.

In 1973, while no modification was ever granted in the 1855 classification, Baron Philippe obtained - not without difficulty - the revision and Mouton officially joined the elite of the Premiers Grands Crus Classés of Bordeaux. When she died in 1988, her Filipino daughter took over the reins, helped by an unparalleled technical team, and successfully maintained her father's projects until his death in 2014. Today it is these three children, Camille Sereys from Rothschild, Philippe Sereys de Rothschild and Julien de Beaumarchais de Rothschild jointly manage the estate.

Each vat has a different size corresponding to the various plots of the castle. Aging for around twenty months is done in the purest Médoc tradition, entirely in new barrels, with topping and fining with egg white in order to stabilize the wine by precipitating the solid particles remaining towards the bottom of the barrel. Most vintages offer opulence, richness and depth, embellished with a remarkable aromatic complexity ranging from blackcurrant to roasted coffee, including mint and fine leather. The peculiarity of Château Mouton-Rothschild, if it should still be remembered, is that it collaborates each year with an artist to design a unique label for wine. We can thus find labels made by Chagall, Braque, Picasso, Dali, Francis Bacon and even Prince Charles of England!
