Domaine Comtes Lafon

Covering various appellations of the vineyards of the Côte de Beaune, in Burgundy, the Domaine des Comtes Lafon almost did not survive the death of its founder, Jules Lafon. Originally from Tarn-et-Garonne, working for the Administration of Registration, Domains and Stamps, he was transferred to Dijon in 1887. In 1894, he married Marie Boch, whose father was a landowner in Meursault and a merchant. in wines. Having become a lawyer, Jules Lafon was made pontifical count in 1918, a nobiliary title that will appear in the name of the estate he is in the process of establishing: the Domaine des Comtes Lafon. Developing a growing interest in the wines of his adopted region, Jules Lafon acquired several Premiers Crus (Genevrières, Perrières, Charmes) and a Grand Cru (Montrachet, in 1918). The one who was also mayor of Meursault, bringing up to date the traditional Burgundian paulee in his town (1923), bequeathed his estate to his sons upon his death in 1940. After Pierre's death (1944), it was Charles that the responsibility of operating the Domaine des Comtes Lafon falls. Little interested in wine, he thought of selling the estate, partially in sharecropping, but was dissuaded from doing so by his nephew René. Since 1993, the estate has once again been fully exploited by the Lafon family.
