Domaine Robert Groffier Père & Fils
The Domaine Robert Groffier embodies the excellence of Burgundy red wines, rooted in the prestigious Côte de Nuits. Its origins date back to the 19th century with Frédéric Groffier, who laid the foundations for this family estate. Founded in the 1950s by Jules Groffier, Robert's father, the estate developed under Robert's leadership, who initiated the bottling of wines. Serge Groffier succeeded his father, before Nicolas Groffier, born in 1984 and representing the fourth generation, took over in 2005. Based in Morey-Saint-Denis, the estate does not own any vineyards in this appellation but extends its 8 hectares over exceptional terroirs in Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin.
The vineyards, mainly composed of old vines over 40 years old on clay-limestone soils, benefit from a continental climate conducive to Pinot Noir. The estate is the largest owner of Chambolle-Musigny Les Amoureuses Premier Cru with 1 hectare, and also owns 1 hectare of Bonnes-Mares Grand Cru, nearly 0.5 hectares of Chambertin Clos de Bèze Grand Cru, as well as plots in Les Hauts-Doix and Les Sentiers Premier Crus. Sustainable viticulture, with ploughing of the soil, Cordon de Royat pruning and rigorous debudding, aims for low yields to produce ripe, concentrated grapes.
The winemaking style, adapted to each vintage, favours a non-interventionist approach. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully sorted. Depending on the vintage, up to 20% of whole bunches are retained, compared to 50% in the past. Cold maceration at 10-12°C for 4-5 days precedes fermentation, with short punching down and temperatures rising to 35°C to extract colour and tannins. Maceration lasts 17-20 days, followed by ageing in oak barrels (15-25% new for most, up to 100% for some grands crus) for 18-20 months. The wines are racked once and bottled without fining or filtration, preserving their purity.
Renowned for their elegance, finesse and ageing potential, the wines of Domaine Robert Groffier seduce with complex aromas of red fruits, violets and undergrowth, with a harmonious tannic structure. Ideal with game or mature cheeses, these Burgundy Pinot Noirs are a must for wine lovers.
