Domaine Ponsot

By settling in Morey-Saint-Denis in 1872, William Ponsot had a hollow nose. Because two legendary plots of Burgundy, Clos des Monts-Luisants and Clos de la Roche were partially attached to the domain. In 1920 William handed over to his nephews Henri and Hippolyte Ponsot, both diplomats. Hippolyte Ponsot was notably to his credit for having enlarged the domain's hold on Clos de la Roche, and for having started exporting its bottles, notably to the United States, which was rare at the time. He then took part in the creation of Burgundy AOCs in 1935 and 1936. His son Jean-Marie took over from him in 1942. His son Laurent lent him a hand from 1982. The wines of the Ponsots estate were exported all over the world. and are among the most sought after in Burgundy. Laurent Ponsot is especially known for having confused wine forger Rudy Kurniawan in the United States. The estate produces many legendary wines, including its Clos de la Roche. Assisted by Alexandre Abel, Marie-Rose Ponsot is now manager, following the departure of her brother Laurent Ponsot at the start of 2017. Although the estate has lost, from the 2016 vintage, several vines (Chambolle premier cru Charmes, Griotte-Chambertin , Chambertin and Clos Saint-Denis), he has no less than six grands crus left, including Clos de la Roche, flagship of the range, and the astonishing white premier cru of Morey Les Monts-Luisants, exclusively composed of aligoté.
