Domaine de Marzilly 'Ullens'
The Domaine de Marzilly is one of the most unique estates in Champagne. Located in the heart of the Massif de Saint-Thierry, near Hermonville, it was founded in 2012 by Maxime Ullens. Originally from Belgium and initially trained in architecture, he discovered the ruins of the Château de Marzilly, a historic estate dating back to the 12th century, surrounded by dozens of hectares of parkland and forest. This restoration project quickly turned into a true winemaking adventure when he rediscovered an old vineyard plot that had been preserved over generations.
Driven by a growing passion for wine, Maxime Ullens returned to school at the Avize viticultural high school to acquire the skills necessary to manage his vineyard. Together with his wife Anna, he gradually developed Domaine de Marzilly around four hectares of vines planted on the sandy terroirs of Hermonville. Meunier plays a central role here, elegantly expressing the full character of the Massif de Saint-Thierry.
In 2020, the estate released its first cuvée under the Champagne Ullens brand. That same year, Maxime Ullens was named Winemaker of the Year in Champagne by Gault & Millau, an honor recognizing his meticulous work and his vision of the terroir.
Today, Domaine de Marzilly embodies the perfect blend of heritage, innovation, and respect for biodiversity. Its Champagnes captivate with their precision, vitality, and ability to reveal the full richness of a terroir that remains relatively unknown in Champagne.
