The Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Meix-Bas’ from the Messager-Germain family is a red wine made from 30-year-old vines, 100% Pinot Noir. Located at the northern end of the appellation, this climate benefits from well-drained limestone soil. Hand-picking and careful vinification, including 30% whole grapes and sustained extraction, give this wine a rich, complex structure. Ageing for 12 months in unfiltered oak barrels reinforces its authentic character. Production limited to 300 bottles and 10 magnums.
The Messager-Germain family's Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Meix-Bas’ is an exceptional wine, a faithful reflection of its unique terroir. This climat, at the northernmost point of the Gevrey-Chambertin appellation, is distinguished by its mid-slope location on limestone soil that is not overly pure. Its altitude and eastern exposure, combined with its terraced position, give it great complexity.
The vines, 30 years old, are exclusively Pinot Noir. The grapes were harvested by hand on 15 September 2023, allowing a rigorous selection of bunches. The vinification process involved 30% whole grapes, followed by a pre-fermentation phase at 8°C for 5 days. Extraction was deliberately sustained, with six punchings of the cap and gentle pumping over to limit oxygenation, in order to fully express the wine's aromatic potential and structure. Extended pressing was carried out to reinforce the wine's structure.
The wine was aged for 12 months in single-vineyard oak barrels, without filtration, to preserve its integrity and richness. This meticulous approach has resulted in a confidential production of 300 bottles and 10 magnums, reflecting the domaine's philosophy of quality and respect for the terroir.
On tasting, this Gevrey-Chambertin ‘Meix-Bas’ reveals a deep colour and complex aromas combining ripe red fruit, spicy notes and mineral nuances. On the palate, it offers a fine structure, silky tannins and a lingering finish, testifying to its ageing potential and its ability to accompany refined dishes.
